How to get water out of your phone speaker

Start by protecting the entire phone. Muffling after liquid exposure can be temporary, but sound is only one part of a safe drying sequence.

Immediate steps: disconnect all cables, follow your manufacturer's power-off and positioning instructions, and wipe the exterior with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not reconnect a cable while the connector is wet.

Disconnect & Power Off

Unplug chargers and headphones immediately. Turn off the phone if liquid ingress is suspected.

Drain & Position

Follow the maker's drainage instructions. Apple tells iPhone owners to tap gently against a hand with the connector facing down.

Sound & Airflow

Follow manufacturer drying guidance. A tone is optional only when the device is safe to operate.

If the phone operates normally and muffling is caused by water tension over the speaker mesh, acoustic diaphragm movement can help. Our 165–230 Hz sweep may shift nearby droplets, but we have not established its effectiveness on every phone. Do not power a suspected internally wet phone back on just to try it.

Begin at a comfortable volume. Stop if the sound is uncomfortable or distortion gets worse.

Hearing nothing?
  • On iPhone, turn off the silent switch (or Silent mode in Control Center); it can mute browser audio.
  • Raise the media volume with the side buttons while the tone is playing.
  • Disconnect Bluetooth headphones or speakers so the sound plays from the phone itself.
Sound played but nothing changed?

Stop repeating the tone if the speaker sounds the same or worse. A sweep cannot establish that the phone is dry or repair hardware damage. Continue with the wet-phone drying and repair decision guide.

AirPods and wireless earbuds
